Joe's Flight Chart in 3-D

Postby adamschneider » Tue Mar 27, 2007 2:52 pm

(I posted this in the "Disc Flight Ratings Chart" sticky topic a couple days ago, but someone pointed out to me that a lot of people don't notice the "stickies," so I'm re-posting in a new, separate topic.)

I was looking at Joe's Flight Chart and wondered if there was a way to visually present the data -- sort of like Marshall Street's Flight Guide, except JFC is more detailed. So... how to present data in four (yes, FOUR) dimensions? We have HSS, LSS, power requirement, and range.

The solution: Google Earth! I converted HSS and LSS to latitude and longitude, power requirement to altitude (discs for noodle-arms are at sea level), and range to color. Here's the KML file:

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/maps/joes_flight_chart.kmz (76K) -- of course, you need Google Earth to view it.

A screen shot:

Per a suggestion from Blake T., I put each "range" (1 through 5, at intervals of 0.5) into its own Google Earth folder, so they can be turned on and off. Here's just the "Range 5" discs, with one point's pop-up window showing:

This is GREAT.

It's pretty interesting to choose only the discs in your bag. Holes and overlap jump out pretty quickly.

Thanks Adam.

Neither axis shows up for me, it just shows a scramble of colors in the background. The disc dots are fine, anyone have any idea what could cause that, or is anyone having the same problem?

"Image overlays" are the feature of Google Earth that seems to be the most sensitive to your computer's resources (memory, processing power, etc.). You might try going into Google Earth's preferences and changing the "graphics mode" or whatever they call it.

Bravo Adam, this is quite amazing. Perfect as both a tool and for entertainment.

Did you mean you were able to select each disc you have and deselect all the others?
That would be the only thing I could think of to add
Sometimes I wonder... "Why is that disc getting bigger?" Then it hits me.

You can do that easily. First, click the checkbox by the "discs" folder to hide everything, then open the "Range" folders and check the boxes by your discs to re-show them. If you can't find them, hit Ctrl-F/Cmd-F to search.

wow thanks so much! its amazing.
Next thing you are gonna program an instant bag analyzer to tell you when you happen to be carrying three molds for the same shot.

Oh and I am retarded for not noticing that earlier
